NYC
Call us crazy but we at Apples and Alligator Pears love abandoned buildings. If it used to be a psychiatric hospital, even better!!
Fall is definitely here and what could be better than touring an abandoned hospital to get ready for Halloween? Like caramel apples and piles of leaves it just seems like an appropriate October event!
On October 6 + 7 Open House New York is holding their annual Open House weekend. Some of the city’s best and secret architecture is open to the public. A lot of these locations are only open for this one weekend every year. Sign up to their website now for updates. You can register for any event when they are announced which I was told is going to be September 28th. I would mark it on the calendar and do it early because the good ones fill up fast.
My favorite event that they offer is to tour the abandoned hospital on Ellis Island. The hospital was used for immigrants that passed through Ellis Island if they were found to have infectious diseases or obvious disorders. It was closed in 1954 and has remained untouched since then.
The tour is free but you do have to pay for a ticket on the Circle Line to get to Ellis Island. Open House advises you to wear sturdy shoes for the trip. No one under 16 is permitted on this tour.
For some awesome photos of the hospital go to this website:

Stephen Wilkes has been photographing the hospital since 1998.

Nice and spooky pics. I wonder how the second one looks like at night.
I’m going to LA in December and love Urban Exploration Photography and wonder if you can point me in the direction of some accessible abandoned buildings, hotels, hospitals, schools, offices, etc.
