Los Angeles
I trust that everybody from Santa Monica to Silverlake knows by now that the new season of Cinespia Cemetery Screenings begins this Saturday, May 19 with Robert Altman’s The Player at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. I for one am tickled by the notion of projecting movies onto crypts in a graveyard that boasts some of Hollywood’s most famous cadavers from Rudolph Valentino to Johnny Ramone. Back in Jersey the Friends cemetery was my favorite spot to sneak off to during study hall and snog after all. But I’m thinking with the immense popularity of these cemetery screenings that there must be something else of cinematic significance going on around this city that doesn’t involve reverting back to red carpets or five dollar popcorn…
Que dancing tiki god with a mohawk!
How about the Mission Tiki Drive-in in Montclair? A real deal tiki themed drive-in theater that’s open SEVEN days a week with FOUR screens showing DOUBLE features for just SEVEN dollars! They even have a snack bar where you can get a cheeseburger for as little as two George Washingtons or a corn dog for a buck and a quarter. This Saturday features the monthly Punk Rock Drive-in that includes three punk rock bands, two movies, bbq, raffles and Varla Girls! Rawr!
Now before you scoff at the location being in Montclair, I would like to note that people begin to line up with their pastel colored picnic coolers on wheels outside the gates of Hollywood Cemetery a good four hours before the movie starts. Montclair is a 40 minute air-conditioned i-pod blaring short drive from Hollywood. On this occasion I suggest you make a new playlist mix titled Oi! Which reminds me to remind you to be sure your radio works as the movies are transmitted via fm stereo. How old school can you be? Really, who needs a cold headstone when you’ve got a futon in your flatbed?
Punk rock drive-in will be at the screen that shows the double feature listed below. But word on the street is that you are free to screen hop over to any of the other double features playing!

I want to go! You think it’ll still be going in October?
WOW…awesome write up! thank you for that.
answering the other question on how long this will last , well it’s really dependant on good ole mother nature…plus we need to keep in mind it starts getting dark early in oct making it harder to coordinate…but we will most definetely be doing again starting up April of 2008
